The TLDR version is, the Artists presented arguments that DeviantART and MidJourney and others are liable for the INPUT data that makes their AI great, and are responsible for the OUTPUT of the ai generators too. It's much better worded than that in his post, but that + the gofundme just reached its goal, is GREAT news for artists. We're moving forward everyone! I have a lot of hope that this is going to pave the way to opt-in systems, ie ethically sourced from the START, generators. Which will also protect users data online better, because it will effectively tell companies they cannot mine data anymore the way they have. That's the hope, anyway! There were 2 congressional hearings on AI today. I missed the first, but watched bits of it. CEO of Open AI agrees we need regulation, but all the same dodges all the important questions. "Did anyone do this right?" and not one AI company could be named, only more dodging of the questions. The second hearing, I listened as I worked, and I missed much of it. But the last half was interesting discussion - but nothing I haven't heard already. The big TLDR of it though, is that these older folks and folks unaffected don't see how it's harming us right now. Not one person that I saw, mentioned how visual artists have been affected, or how the data set was created, not a peep about Stability AI and LAION5B, and the ethics it breaks. They did have meaningful talking points on the importance of consent, but not a peep about making AI data sets opt in by default. Why? "we can't slow progress." I'm tired. Exhausted. I'm not sure. It could just be the beginning of their end (as they are, as it would, if they wish to stay in business, force them into ethical practices instead.) What are your thoughts on this? I feel positive this will be good for the artist community, but I'm also not holding my breath just yet.

It's my birthday soon lol. I'll be 33. The wild thing is that I started this account on a cold winter day in the early 2008. 15 years. There's a lot to think about. 1) most of my peers have moved on or become something big 2) the internet is not what it should be - it's all late stage capitalism babbyyy 3) I'm slowly trying to learn how to stop beating myself up for not being better. 4) I'm 99% sure I have adhd and may be on the autistic spectrum. I'm doing everything I can do improve but there's a lot in my head just stopping me, and after 15 years of trying and constantly failing... I wish I could get medication to see if that's what I need. So the supreme court ruled that Andy Worhal painting was too close to the photograph of Prince, that it was considered plagiarism, and thus this could help in the fight and case against AI generative models.
